Alandroal Castle rises in the historic centre of the town of Alandroal, in the district of Évora, deep in the Alentejo borderlands. It is a Gothic fortification of broadly oval plan, built by the Order of Avis at the turn of the thirteenth into the fourteenth century, at a time when the Portuguese crown was reinforcing its line of defence along the frontier with Castile. The complex has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.

Construction and the mark of the «Mouro Galvo»

The building is precisely dated by inscriptions carved into the wall itself. The first stone was laid on 6 February 1294 and the work completed on 24 February 1298, throughout under the mastership of D. Lourenço Afonso, master of the Order of Avis, during the reign of D. Dinis. One of the inscriptions is particularly remarkable because in it the master builder identifies himself in person: «I, Mouro Galvo». This signature, exceedingly rare in Portuguese medieval military architecture, reveals that the work commissioned by the Christian elites was directed by a mason of Islamic tradition.

That origin is reflected in the very conception of the fortress. The builder drew on solutions then in use in Seville and Granada, perceptible in the modelling of the towers and in the use of elements such as the horseshoe arch. Alandroal Castle is, for this reason, a singular example of the dialogue between the Christian building tradition and Mudéjar know-how, a theme that belongs to the broader study of Islamic art in Portugal.

Architecture and defensive elements

The oval plan adapts to the terrain, organising the enclosure around an inner courtyard. Quadrangular towers are distributed at the corners of the wall, and the keep, also quadrangular and of several storeys, is set against the enclosure. The main entrance, to the east, is the so-called Porta Legal, defined by a Gothic arch in a corridor and protected by towers that frame and watch over the access. The battlements are crowned with pyramidal caps, in a carefully wrought design that reinforces the Gothic reading of the complex.

Beside the keep the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça was raised, in a gesture that links the military function to religious devotion, common in the frontier strongholds administered by the military orders. As an example of Gothic architecture in Portugal, Alandroal stands out for the coherence between the military structure and the ornaments that accompany it.

Importance in the Alentejo borderlands

The Order of Avis had a marked presence in the municipality of Alandroal, where it kept a master’s stud farm and managed wine cellars, vineyards, estates and hunting preserves. The castle served as the administrative head and a symbol of this order’s power in the territory, forming part of the dense network of fortified strongholds that defended the Alentejo along the border. A few kilometres away, fortresses such as Vila Viçosa Castle made up the same defensive system that watched over the frontier with the kingdom of Castile.

Today the fortress dominates the town’s landscape and constitutes one of the most emblematic landmarks of medieval military heritage in the Alentejo interior, bearing witness both to the royal strategy of D. Dinis and to the contribution of master builders of Islamic tradition.
