Paul do Boquilobo Biosphere Reserve, designated in 1981, connects an Almonda River wetland with the agricultural landscape of Ribatejo, across Golegã and Torres Novas municipalities. Water, fields and settlements explain a territory where conservation meets everyday life.
A landscape shaped by water
The marsh occupies low ground associated with the Almonda. Flooding from the Tagus influences seasonal inundation, while willows, aquatic vegetation and cultivated land create different environments. Herons and other waterbirds belong to this landscape; observation conditions depend on the season and water levels.
The Man and the Biosphere territory reaches beyond a single marsh. Reserva Natural do Paul do Boquilobo has its own protection framework. UNESCO designation and national classification are separate instruments, with access and permitted uses determined locally.
Horses, photography and rural memory
Golegã offers another way to discover the landscape through equestrian culture and the horse’s relationship with farming. The Rota do Cavalo e do Ribatejo connects country paths and settlement heritage. Equestrian art in Portugal has a separate UNESCO recognition under intangible heritage.
At Casa-Estúdio Carlos Relvas, photography adds a different cultural dimension. Museu Agrícola dos Riachos, featured in the reserve’s visitor portal, introduces tools, occupations and rural ways of life. These attractions are starting points for discovery, rather than a complete register of the reserve’s classified assets.
Planning a visit
Consult the reserve portal and its visitor selection. Ask the responsible organisations about wetland access, accompanied activities and cultural venues’ opening arrangements. Choose routes according to weather and water conditions.
