Berlengas Biosphere Reserve, designated in 2011, brings together the archipelago, a marine connection and the mainland city of Peniche. Seeing this territory as just one island or fort misses the relationship between natural environments and coastal communities.
Islands and the mainland connection
Berlenga, Estelas and Farilhões form groups of islands, islets and rocks exposed to the Atlantic. Cliffs, seabirds and coastal habitats distinguish the archipelago. Its relationship with Peniche brings ports, fishing and travel between land and sea into the reserve’s story.
The Man and the Biosphere programme connects conservation, research and sustainable development. Reserva Natural das Berlengas and other protection rules have their own frameworks. UNESCO recognition grants neither unrestricted access to every islet nor a World Heritage inscription for each building.
Buildings for living and navigating
The Forte de São João Baptista introduces defensive architecture and Berlenga’s maritime position. Farol Duque de Bragança adds the history of navigation. Bairro dos Pescadores connects the landscape with human presence and work at sea.
These perspectives complement one another: seeing the fort does not replace exploring habitats, and one crossing does not reveal the whole reserve. The Oeste Geopark provides another regional perspective through a separate UNESCO programme.
Preparing a crossing
Consult the local visitor portal and the official BerlengasPass platform. Check the access-title conditions and availability relevant to your visit. Arrange transport separately with the boat operator; an access title is not a boat ticket.
Weather and sea conditions affect crossings. Check which paths and venues are actually open. Continue through our Portuguese biosphere reserve index.
