Oeste Geopark: dinosaurs, sea cliffs and coastal heritage
Explore Oeste UNESCO Global Geopark, designated in 2024: fossils, cliffs and museums, with sources distinguishing its territory from an extension request.

Oeste Geopark, designated by UNESCO in 2024, connects the coast’s geological record with museums and communities. Its reference extent brings together Bombarral, Cadaval, Caldas da Rainha, Lourinhã, Peniche and Torres Vedras. The territory offers routes into palaeontology and cliff landscapes, without making each place a separate UNESCO inscription.
Fossils and layers of time
The Lourinhã area provides a starting point for dinosaur fossils and the research surrounding them. Begin in a museum to distinguish original specimens, reconstructions and the context of discoveries before looking at the landscape.
At Peniche, coastal rock layers hold reference points used to compare geological time. Ponta do Trovão contains the international boundary stratotype for the base of the Toarcian stage of the Lower Jurassic: a reference point defined within a rock sequence. Papôa offers another geosite example. Consult the official descriptions to understand these places rather than treating them as open fossil-collecting sites.
Human history along the coast
Peniche bobbin lace and the National Museum of Resistance and Freedom add craftsmanship and contemporary history. The museum and interpretation-centre network helps combine themes while keeping their designations distinct.
The extension and your visit
As checked on 3 October 2026, the operator describes an enlargement process involving Alenquer, Óbidos, Berlengas and a marine area. UNESCO lists an area-modification request for evaluation in 2026. Municipal participation, application and territorial approval are separate stages. Check the decision and updated map before attributing the enlarged extent to the designated territory.
Choose one area first, consult the official geosites and confirm opening and bookings. At cliffs, follow signs, tide information and local notices; avoid unstable edges and collecting that destroys geological context. Compare Portugal’s geoparks.
