Tejo/Tajo Internacional Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, designated in 2016, brings together a shared Portugal–Spain territory with the river as its axis. It is not the whole Tagus basin or the estuary beside Lisbon. River landscapes connect conservation with border communities.
A river through Mediterranean landscapes
Steep valleys, cork oaks, scrub, pasture and cultivated fields form different environments. Black storks and other birds help explain the importance of river habitats and slopes. Farming, livestock raising and forestry also belong to the territory’s identity.
Portuguese and Spanish natural parks have their own rules. The Man and the Biosphere programme connects conservation, research and sustainable development without replacing those rules. Naturtejo Geopark has a separate UNESCO designation and extent, even where it explores related themes.
Bridges, farming memory and megaliths
Ponte de Segura, across the Erges, introduces a historic border connection. Centro Cultural Raiano in Idanha-a-Nova offers insight into the municipality’s cultural heritage and memory, including agricultural life.
On the Spanish side, the dolmens of Valencia de Alcántara introduce prehistoric occupation; Alcántara adds Roman and religious heritage. Identify each place’s country and consult its managers. These examples, featured by local portals, are not a complete inventory of reserve components.
Planning a visit
Start with the Portuguese network’s visitor selection and the Junta de Extremadura cultural portal. Choose a riverbank, settlement and theme before combining routes. Confirm centre opening arrangements, journeys, path conditions and any river activities with those responsible.
A land route and a river activity require different arrangements. Designation provides neither one admission ticket nor guaranteed wildlife sightings. Compare Gerês–Xurés and our Portuguese reserve index.
