Gerês–Xurés Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, designated in 2009, connects northern Portugal with Galicia in Spain. This shared territory is counted once in the Portuguese index. Mountains, rivers, villages and rural practices connect conservation with communities.
A landscape across the border
Deep valleys, plateaux and watercourses link mountain environments. The Lima and its tributaries help explain the landscape’s continuity between the two countries. An administrative border does not separate every natural process or the communities’ historical relationships.
Peneda-Gerês National Park in Portugal and Baixa Limia–Serra do Xurés Natural Park in Spain are essential reference points. The Xunta de Galicia introduces the Spanish park and its relationship with the reserve. The parks retain their own rules; biosphere designation does not grant access everywhere.
Rural memory and old roads
Castelo de Lindoso introduces defence of the Lima valley. Espigueiros and canastros add architecture associated with storing harvests. In Campo do Gerês, Museu da Geira presents the Roman road and roadbuilding techniques.
Museu Etnográfico de Vilarinho da Furna preserves the memory of the village submerged by the dam. On the Spanish side, Santa Comba de Bande church, in Bande municipality, offers another architectural perspective. Identifying each place’s country helps organise a cross-border visit without confusing national heritage.
Choosing a base and route
Use the reserve portal and its visitor selection. Choose a sector and theme first, then confirm journeys, museum opening arrangements and path conditions. These attractions are not necessarily stages of one continuous walk.
