The Algarvensis Geopark, in the Algarve, brings geological and cultural heritage together across the territories of Loulé, Silves and Albufeira. Designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2026, it connects uplands, the Barrocal, the coast and marine environments. Recognition applies to this defined territory; it does not make the whole Algarve a World Heritage property.

From ancient seas to today’s landscape

The official geological history explains how rocks formed in different environments help us read the terrain. Limestone dissolution creates cavities and other karst features in the Barrocal, while coastal sediments and fossils record former marine environments. Erosion, springs and aquifers reveal how water connects these landscapes.

One notable fossil is Metoposaurus algarvensis, a Triassic amphibian around 227 million years old, documented at Penina. It was not a dinosaur. A fossil’s value also lies in its rock, layer and discovery site: observation and photography preserve that information better than taking a souvenir.

Choosing a route

Begin with the official routes and trails index. Rota Melodia da Água connects places such as Cerro da Vila, Loulé and Fonte Benémola; Rota Pegadas Ancestrais brings landscapes and communities together, including Paderne, Alte and Penina. These are territorial itineraries with several stops: a driving route is different from a continuous walking trail.

Pick two or three nearby stops and read their individual records. Confirm transport, access, reservations and current arrangements with the geopark or operator, particularly for the rock-salt mine and indoor spaces. Outdoors, adjust plans to heat, weather and local notices. Inclusion on a route does not guarantee free entry or access without booking.

Stone, work and heritage

Geology acquires another dimension through farming, water supply, building and crafts. Continue exploring the territory with Silves Castle, keeping the monument’s history and classification distinct.

Compare Algarvensis with the other Portuguese geoparks. UNESCO designation supports geoconservation, education and local development and undergoes revalidation; it does not replace the legal protections applying to individual sites.
