Terras de Cavaleiros Geopark follows the boundaries of the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros, in Trás-os-Montes. Its UNESCO Global Geopark designation dates from 2015. It is a territory for discovering relationships between rocks, landforms and communities, rather than a single visitor attraction.
Morais and the history of rocks
The Morais Massif preserves rocks that help reconstruct ancient continental collisions and the formation of the Variscan mountain belt. Their importance lies in relationships between rock units and structures. An interpreted visit can explain why an otherwise modest-looking outcrop matters to geologists.
Consult the official geodiversity directory to choose examples such as the Lagoa Gneisses, the Foz do Azibo thrust or the Morais Fault. They record different processes, not compulsory stops on one walking route. The Morais interpretation centre is a starting point; the operator specifies advance booking for guided visits and educational programmes.
Azibo and living heritage
The Azibo reservoir adds water, habitats and landscape observation. Its Protected Landscape has its own boundaries and rules: ICNF notes that it also includes part of the municipality of Bragança. That perimeter is distinct from the geopark’s.
At Podence, the Caretos and Carnival belong to another UNESCO programme, Intangible Cultural Heritage, inscribed in 2019. The Royal Filatory of Chacim adds the history of silk production. Together, these examples show how geology can be complemented by living traditions and industrial heritage.
Planning your discovery
Start with the operator’s information and choose an area: Morais for geological interpretation, Azibo for landscapes or Podence for local culture. Check bookings, facility opening and trail conditions before setting out.
Review weather, distance and accessibility. Territorial recognition does not guarantee access to every outcrop or property. Preserve rocks in place and respect habitats and local activities. Compare Portugal’s geoparks to continue exploring.
