Biosphere Reserves · since 2015

Meseta Ibérica Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, designated in 2015, connects Trás-os-Montes in Portugal with Zamora and Salamanca provinces in Spain. Mountains, river valleys, fields and settlements form a shared territory counted once in the Portuguese index.

Rivers, woodland and farming landscapes

The Douro helps explain connections between the two sides of the border. Montesinho in Portugal and Sanabria in Spain offer different environments within the reserve portal’s territorial overview. Woodland, meadows, pasture and crops show that human practices also shape the landscape.

The Man and the Biosphere programme connects conservation, research and sustainable development. Natural parks retain their own protection instruments. Designation does not give every village or building a World Heritage inscription, nor establish identical boundaries for every park and the reserve.

Buildings, skills and festivities

Castelo de Bragança introduces Portuguese defensive architecture. In rural areas, ovens, mills and communal facilities connect buildings with everyday life. These are starting points for discovering an inhabited landscape rather than a complete list of classified assets.

Winter masquerades and festivities connect traditions in Bragança, Zamora and Salamanca. The Caretos of Podence have a separate UNESCO intangible heritage inscription. This recognition does not automatically cover every masked celebration in Meseta Ibérica.

Planning a cross-border visit

Start with the reserve’s ZASNET portal and its visitor selection. Choose river landscapes, villages or cultural themes, then confirm each destination’s country, distances, opening arrangements and route conditions. The whole territory should not be treated as one continuous itinerary.
