The Caleiras de Escusa, also known as the Fornos de Cal da Escusa, are a group of five lime kilns in the parish of São Salvador da Aramenha, in the municipality of Marvão. It is worth saying at once what they are not: although the name and the region might suggest ancient mining, they are not a Roman mining site but vernacular industrial architecture of the 20th century, which national classification recognises as a National Monument.

What they are

According to the SIPA inventory, they are structures associated with the exploitation of local limestone and the production of lime, representative of one of the typical industries of the region’s economy. The record notes that this industry dates back to the Roman occupation and remained alive until about four decades ago, when more modern and efficient means of production emerged. The SIPA chronology dates the construction of the kilns to the 20th century and the end of operation to the 1960s. The link to the Roman period concerns the activity in general, not the kilns visible today.

How they worked

The SIPA describes five kilns, all roughly identical, of irregular circular plan, arranged along a straight line running west–east. They were built making use of small isolated elevations of clayey composition, excavated in the form of a cylindrical shaft. The outer walls are faced with brick and stone and reinforced by two triangular buttresses, set on rock foundations, beside the rectangular doorway, with a stone lintel, through which the firewood was introduced. Inside there is a cylindrical hearth at ground level and a covering in an imperfect double dome, made of limestone fragments, in which the inner, conical dome served for ventilation. The limestone was burnt to obtain lime.

Classification

The Atlas do Património Cultural, consulted on 5 November 2026, records the Caleiras de Escusa (NINV 69971) as a National Monument, classified by Decree No. 29/2012, Diário da República, 1st series, No. 225, of 21 November 2012. The special protection zone was set by Ordinance No. 284/2014, Diário da República, 2nd series, No. 82, of 29 April 2014. The process, according to the SIPA, involved the opening of proceedings in 1995, the proposal of the Consultative Council of the IGESPAR in 2008, and the ratification of the classification in December 2010.

Setting

They lie in a rural lowland setting, near isolated limestone escarpments of the Serra de Marvão. The parish is also that of the Roman city of Ammaia, which allows several periods of stone exploitation to be read within the same territory. Preparing a visit

The SIPA indicates private property belonging to individuals and current disuse, and locates the kilns beside a rural road running parallel to the road linking Castelo de Vide and São Salvador da Aramenha. In the consultation of 5 November 2026, we found no official information on access or visits, so please confirm with the Câmara Municipal de Marvão before going and respect the property.
