The Terreiro da Batalha dos Atoleiros is the place, at the Herdade dos Atoleiros in the municipality of Fronteira, where on 6 April 1384 D. Nuno Álvares Pereira defeated a Castilian force. It has been a National Monument since 2023, a recent classification that protects above all the landscape and the subsoil: what is kept there is a terrain, not a building. The battle preceded that of Aljubarrota by about a year and a half, which is described in the Campo Militar de São Jorge.
The battle of 1384
The record of the Património Cultural places the clash within the dynastic crisis of 1383-1385, opened with the death of D. Fernando. In 1384 the king of Castile marched on Lisbon and another Castilian army invaded the Alentejo. The Master of Avis appointed D. Nuno Frontier Lord of the Alentejo, and he gathered about 1,500 men, including 100 crossbowmen and 300 lancers. According to the record, he awaited the enemy at Atoleiros, a marshy terrain between Sousel and Fronteira, about 60 km from the Castilian border.
He adopted a rectangular formation, which the record calls the «square technique», with the vanguard dismounted and rows of lances planted in the ground to face the cavalry. The record gives the Castilian side 1,000 lances and 5,000 men, including Portuguese led by the prior of Crato, D. Pedro Álvares, elder brother of D. Nuno. These figures are those given in the note of the record, not independent counts. The classification decree stresses that it was an essentially tactical victory, linked to the topography, and that it demonstrated for the first time in the Iberian Peninsula the value of infantry, the «battle on foot on land». After it, D. Nuno was appointed constable. The final victory of the crisis, at Aljubarrota, is the origin of the Mosteiro da Batalha and of the town of Batalha.
What is classified
Decree No. 3/2023, published in the Diário da República, 1st series, No. 27, on 7 February 2023, classifies the Terreiro da Batalha dos Atoleiros as a site of national interest, with the designation of national monument, according to the attached plan. The decree describes a natural and historical-cultural landscape where the original topography, little altered by agricultural use, is preserved. The location of the battle rests on oral tradition, geographical, geomorphological, toponymic and bibliographical data, and archaeological evidence: medieval armament, concentrated on the right bank of the Águas Belas stream, and traces of a Roman road from Fronteira to Estremoz, which Fernão Lopes indicates was used by both armies.
Ordinance No. 50/2023, of 16 February, set the restrictions. The whole site is an area of archaeological sensitivity, and any intervention with impact on the subsoil, including agricultural infrastructure, must be preceded by a diagnostic survey. The area must be preserved, but agricultural interventions for the maintenance and sustainability of the activity and the landscape are authorised. The record does not indicate a link to the World Heritage List.
Memorial and interpretation centre
On the terrace, according to the record (a text from 2007, prior to the classification), there is an indicative plaque and a memorial inaugurated on 6 April 1979, with stone tablets honouring the battle and D. Nuno. In the town of Fronteira there is also a simple monument, formed by a section of a smooth-shafted column.
The Centro de Interpretação da Batalha de Atoleiros (Atoleiros 1384) is on Avenida Heróis dos Atoleiros, in Fronteira, not on the field. According to the municipality, it was opened in 2012 and is the work of the architect Gonçalo Byrne. The visit is mainly audiovisual and has four sections, among them the Panorama da Batalha de Atoleiros. When consulted on 5 November 2026, the municipal page, updated on 10 February 2026, indicated opening Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:00 (last visits at 12:00 and 16:00), with closure on Mondays, 25 December, 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and 1 May. The adult ticket cost 5 euros, the youth (5 to 17 years) or senior ticket 3 euros, and entry was free up to age 5. The telephone number is 245 604 023.
We found no official information on access to the terrace, which is agricultural land; please ask the municipality before going. For other battlefields and fortifications, see fortificações and the Alentejo.
