The Bolhão Market occupies an entire city block in the Baixa of Porto, between Rua de Sá da Bandeira, Rua Formosa, Rua Alexandre Braga and Rua Fernandes Tomás. It is at once a working fresh-food market, an early twentieth-century building and a Monument of Public Interest. It closed in 2018 for a thorough rehabilitation and reopened on 15 September 2022. It remains managed by the municipality and sells fish, fruit and vegetables, among other products.

From the water meadow to the 1914 building

The listing decree summarises the origins. The first market appeared in the mid-nineteenth century, in a square opened over a water meadow where the Fonte do Bolhão spring rose, at the same time as Rua de Sá da Bandeira was being cut. It was a makeshift structure. It was replaced by the present building, designed by the architect António Correia da Silva in a design dated 1914, during the first republican municipal council of Porto. The same decree credits that council with some of the city’s boldest urban planning projects.

The studio responsible for the rehabilitation dates the construction of the building to between 1914 and 1917. On the same page, however, it gives 1914–1920 in the technical data sheet. The sources consulted therefore do not fix a secure completion date.

An architecture between Beaux-Arts and concrete

The building follows the French lesson of Beaux-Arts architecture. The decree describes it as a good national example of the eclectic Beaux-Arts style, with late neoclassical lines and decoration. To these it adds a rational, modern current: reinforced concrete, glass and metal structures, alongside timber roofs and traditional granite stonework. It is thus a case of transition between nineteenth-century iron architecture and twentieth-century concrete structures. Although it is contemporary with the Porto Art Nouveau, the listing does not include it in that style.

Outwardly, the monumentality comes from the cylindrical corner towers, which contrast with the horizontality of the façades. The main façade ends in a heraldic pediment, flanked by allegories of Commerce and Agriculture attributed to Bento Cândido da Silva. Shops facing the surrounding streets connect the market to the life of the block.

Inside, the space is organised into a ground floor and upper galleries, linked by staircases around a large central space. This is divided into two courtyards with stalls roofed in slate. Between them, a covered gallery built in the 1940s links Rua Alexandre Braga and Rua de Sá da Bandeira, the eastern and western entrances. The decree also stresses the sociological value of the place, where the traditional forms of market trade coexist with modern commerce.

Listing and protection

The Bolhão Market was classified as a Monument of Public Interest by Portaria n.º 613/2013, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, no. 182, on 20 September 2013. The same decree set a special protection zone, defined from the built frontages with direct visual relation to the market, marked by buildings predating the second half of the twentieth century. The Cultural Heritage Atlas records the property under inventory number 70059.

At the time, the decree considered the building «unaltered». That description refers to 2013, before the works that followed.

The 2018–2022 rehabilitation

The works were awarded on 15 May 2018, with an initial term of two years. Shortly before, on 2 May, a temporary market had opened on Rua Fernandes Tomás, about 200 metres away, with 5,600 m² and 82 traders, according to the Lusa news agency. The rehabilitation project is by the architect Nuno Valentim, who worked on it between 2014 and 2022. The client was GO Porto, the municipal management and works company, and the construction contract went to the consortium Lúcios & ACA – Bolhão ACE.

The schedule slipped: the completion planned for May 2020 moved to September 2022. According to Lusa, the upper galleries had to be entirely demolished and rebuilt, because they were in worse condition than the preliminary studies indicated. The works also added a logistics basement and a direct link to the Bolhão metro station. The same source gives a contract value of €22.379 million and a final cost about 15% higher.

The market reopened on 15 September 2022. According to the market, it exceeded 600 thousand visits in the first month, whereas before the works the target had been 5,000 visits on the best day. In October 2026 a book on the rehabilitation, with a photographic essay by André Cepeda, was presented in Paris.

The market today

The ground floor remains dedicated to fresh produce. At reopening, the official page announced more than 70 traders, 38 shops facing the outside and ten restaurants on the upper floor. Lusa counted 81 stalls. Management is delegated by the Câmara Municipal do Porto to GO Porto. According to the official page, the market has access through the building’s four doors and ten lifts.

Preparing the visit

When consulted on 5 November 2026, the official website listed these hours: Monday to Friday, 8am–7pm; Saturday, 8am–6pm; restaurants Monday to Saturday until midnight; closed on Sundays and public holidays. The outside shops keep their own hours. The guided tours of 45 minutes took place on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, in Portuguese and English, with a general ticket at €12, for up to 15 people, booked at the counter or by email. On the first Friday of each month there was also a tour with a Portuguese Sign Language interpreter. Please confirm hours, prices and conditions on the official page.

Bolhão metro station has a direct link to the market. The official address is Rua Formosa, 322. The visit pairs well with the Historic Centre of Porto, the Clérigos Tower and the Palácio da Bolsa. To place the building in context, see municipal markets.
